چکیده مقاله
Assessment forms an integral part of education, and every assessment procedure entails the adoption of a number of test-taking strategies on the part of the respondents to arrive at correct answers. It has been argued that the findings of test-taking strategy research can be drawn upon in task design and test validation (Cohen, 2014, 2021). Practically, however, these agendas have not been accomplished due to certain theoretical and methodological challenges. Theoretically, this area of research suffers lack of a clear conceptualization of test-taking strategies while methodologically it is nearly impossible to have access to students’ real-time thought processes as they deploy a particular strategy. Sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing developments leading to increased reliance on technology-assisted language assessment (TALA) have further aggravated these challenges. Hence, an investigation of how these challenges can be resolved warrants due attention. This presentation probes the strengths and weaknesses of commonly used theories and methods in exploring test-taking strategies employed by learners in TALA and offers potential resolutions to these challenges. Accordingly, the relevant literature will be reviewed systematically, and the findings will be examined to elicit possible answers to the identified challenges. Specifically, top-tier journals in applied linguistics and language assessment will be searched for relevant studies published between 2000 and 2022. Hopefully, the presentation will raise awareness regarding how to conduct reliable research on TALA test-taking strategies. This, in turn, will empower teachers to conduct action research in their contexts of practice and draw on the findings of such research to design tests that measure desired constructs. The presenters have published on language assessment in reputable journals and, thus, the participants will be provided with food for thought about the significance of exploring test-taking strategies as well as the required theoretical and methodological tools for research in this area.
