چکیده مقاله |
Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) which is a relatively new approach to linguistics is introduced by Halliday and pays great attention to how the speakers generate utterances and texts to convey their intended meanings. This study intends to investigate two subcategories of construction grammar, namely resultative adjectives and way construction from a systemic functional perspective and their intertextual roles in prose fiction. Previous studies have rarely reported the largely genre-specific use of resultative adjectives and way construction for narrative and fictional text. Also they have paid little attention to these constructions from systemic functional point of view. The present study sheds a light on how SFG puts forward a path to select these structures and how the words in these textual devices are selected under the textual and contextual limitations. The next phase of this study is to answer whether these structures have a priority over other structures in conveying the contextual meaning. The other fold is to investigate resultative adjectives and way construction from an intertextual point of view to investigate whether they can be taken as intertextual elements in prose fiction. To do so, a corpus of modern English prose fiction is used to collect the needed data to answer this question. Text analysis and paying attention to the importance of the organization of information at text level and to see the text as a contextual and situational product can help language learners to understand the meaning better since there is a connection between form and meaning. |
