A needs based approach to TPACK-informed curriculum development for pre-service EFL teachers: A case study of Frahangian Teacher Education University

TPACK is an effective illustration of teachers’ knowledge-base in integrating technology use and computer assisted language learning within the current practice of language teaching. While recent studies have focused on the analysis and implication of TPACK on teachers’ knowledge, the relation of TPACK-informed needs analysis for successful implementation of TPACK in training courses is rarely investigated. The aim of this study is to provide a needs-based approach to development of a TPACK-based curriculum development utilizing a mixed study design. 300 Iranian Pre-service EFL teachers participated in this study and self-reported on the two surveys of TPACK related on perceived needs and necessities. Each survey consists of five sections which are technological knowledge, content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, and a fifth section that combines technological content knowledge, technological pedagogical knowledge, and TPACK items for EFL teachers. Based on the results of the surveys, using a DACUM approach, expert opinions on the module specification on pre-service teachers’ competencies with three components of knowledge, skills, and value was explored. Analysis of the surveys revealed that, on the interface of valued +unsatisfied needs: Domains of TAPCK (81.02r), TCK (67.43r), and TPK (61.15r) orderly have been prioritized by the participants. Results of the DACUM study show that while the domain of PCK still remains a top priority, domains of TCK, TPK, and TPACK are orderly experts’ priorities.
