This study investigated the effects of explicit and implicit teaching of culture shock on improving Iranian male and female EFL learners’ intercultural competence in public state schools in Iran. To meet this goal, 180 Iranian male and female intermediate EFL students studying in high school with the age range of 17 to 18 years old participated in the study. The participants were non-randomly divided into three groups of experimental and control. Throughout the research, a number of instruments and tests were conducted; a general English placement test (Oxford Placement Test) which was used in order to ensure the homogeneity of students of the study in terms of the general language proficiency and the intercultural competence pre- and post-tests. Pretest and post-tests were conducted for all three groups to measure and compare the intercultural competence level of the groups. There were three groups in the study; experimental group A with explicit instruction, experimental group B with implicit instruction, and the control group with no particular instruction of intercultural competence. Also, each group was divided into two groups of the two genders. Therefore, gender differences were also investigated in the study. The results of this study indicated that the explicit instruction of the three cultural affairs had significant positive effects on overall intercultural competence and that the Experimental Group A (female) with Explicit Instruction had the highest improvement in learning cultural affairs and intercultural competence. |
