چکیده مقاله
The rationale for teaching for cross-language transfer (henceforth CLT) has been profusely discussed in the ELT literature; Yet, it has been lightly treated in under-represented contexts, particularly Iran where educational policymakers exclusively determine ‘what to teach’ but leave ‘how to teach’ to teachers’ discretion without considering the varying levels of their professional knowledge. Since ‘how to teach’ is deemed to be the inevitable corollary of teachers’ knowledge in relation to specific instructional issues, we therefore intend to know the extent to which Iranian EFL teachers are intuitively aware of different aspects of CLT. In doing so, one-on-one interviews were conducted with four Iranian EFL teachers in order to explore their conception concerning CLT. Content analysis of the interviews demonstrated that (1) EFL teachers’ conception of CLT is limited to structural properties of languages in question, (2) they do not perceive literacy-related strategies as interdependent across languages, and (3) they are completely unaware of the fact that CLT also operates at affective domain of biliteracy. The implications of the findings will be discussed in relation to in-service EFL teachers’ needs, instructional priorities set by Teacher Education centers, and prospective EFL teachers’ curriculum.
